What does it mean to decolonize your yoga practice anyway?

Published over 1 year ago • 2 min read

Hello Reader,

With the passing of Queen Elizabeth II, the social media streets have been abuzz with various nuanced and complex (as well as not so nuanced, not so complex) perspectives around the long legacy of the British monarch.

At the end of this newsletter, I'll share with you two videos I find quite useful around navigating the complexity surrounding many of those who have been affected by the legacy of colonization. I myself am a product of both sides of the equation, coming from an Anglo-Danish lineage on my maternal line and being of Kikuyu descent on my paternal side.

While I am very much a product of the love, loyalty and mutual respect my parents feel for each other, I can't help but recognise that history lives in me and around me. That history is as much in the present moment as it is in the past. That my yoga sadhana is the refuge and container which can help me hold all streams of the historic and karmic movement that has gotten me to where I am today.

I invite you to dive into the stream of Yogic wisdom with me this autumn

Ashtanga Yoga September Intensive

Ashtanga Yoga + Healing October Intensive

I'm excited to be teaming up with Petri Räisänen this autumn and delving back into my first consistently intentional healing modality: Ashtanga Yoga.

I'll be coming through with an intersectional approach to the method, with an emphasis on how we can meet these critical moments in this current iteration of human civilization with courage, loving accountability and a sense of responsibility for one another.

As promised, here are the two reels I promised to share with you. The first is from Anusha Wijeyakumar, a South Asian yoga educator and social justice advocate. The second comes from a Maori perspective on what decolonization actually means. At the end of the second reel, I invite you to think how we might decolonize our yoga spaces. Is everyone having the same experience of safety and ease as you might enjoy when you practice with your community and teacher? Why or why not?

Be well and continue to support yourself and others during our tender, tumultuous era. I'm grateful to be alive for it and in the same space and time as you, Reader.

Wambui ❤️

Dear Reader, We hope the start of the Spring season has brought you ease and much self-kindness and self-compassion. While it would be understandable to simply wish for positivity about the state of the world, the truth is, this would be an expression of what trauma specialist, Dr. Peter Levine, calls " Bliss bypass as a trauma response." There is so much sustained, ongoing grief and harm being experienced and witnessed in the world, as multiple genocides continue to be waged. This...
