We must love ourselves into who we want to be ❤️

Dear Reader,

We hope the start of the Spring season has brought you ease and much self-kindness and self-compassion. While it would be understandable to simply wish for positivity about the state of the world, the truth is, this would be an expression of what trauma specialist, Dr. Peter Levine, calls " Bliss bypass as a trauma response."

There is so much sustained, ongoing grief and harm being experienced and witnessed in the world, as multiple genocides continue to be waged. This acknowledgement cannot be postponed and bypassed. To do so would be to weaponize positivity into toxicity and performative goodness. One can notice the duality of samsara: feeling great happiness when observing the power of the increasing light, budding green activity in the garden and the precious beauty of flowers; when experiencing a beautiful sunrise in rural Portugal, we can witness, truly, the boons of grace from the unseen forces of protection, love and benevolence.

And yet, and yet...

One can also witness obeisance at the death-affirming altar of war, with its thirst for weapons and ammunition; of so-called leaders who hijack our nervous systems and the deep rooted klesha of abhinivesa by preying on fear, separation and division. Of unacknowledged personal and collective trauma which metastasizes into a culture of crushing freedom and limiting creativity through state-sanctioned murder and imprisonment.

Even our beloved Yoga, that which offers so much healing; that which offers guidance towards freedom from the suffering of the human predicament, has not been immune from the virus of separation and supremacy. The idea of dharma itself can be weaponized to hoard power and privilege, and to oppress those deemed unworthy of dignity.

Yet, Yoga also reveals the fundamental truth that we are all worthy. We know this to be true in our bones as we move through the breath and asana vinyasa, when we are united in mind, body and spirit to the present moment. We know we are worthy. Simply because we exist; simply because we are life and are part of the divine pattern and play of this manifestation. Each and every human being yearns to find their own natural identity, to abide in their true nature; free from the limits and constraints and pain of power hierarchies. We don’t require more antiquated rules and limits which have been imposed to keep us in our place: small, afraid, isolated, feeling resigned and powerless.

As our spiritual friend and mentor, Michelle C. Johnson, writes, "We must love ourselves into who we want to be." Into who we must be.

First, by honestly recognizing the wish (and surrounding wellness industry's messages) to escape into spiritual materialism; as well, by bravely identifying the way toxic behaviour and patterns live in us. The way they have been passed down in our ancestral lineages and shape our blind spots, biases and social conditioning; be it around racism, sexism, cis heteronormativity, ableism and all other categories which deem some to be more worthy of care and safety than others;

And then by lovingly, bravely, tenderly taking care of these seeds of greed, hatred and delusion.

We must love ourselves into who we want to be

Since opening its doors on March 11, 2023, Yoga Roots Odeceixe has been offering non-residential workshops and retreats which focus on transmitting the yogic teachings of equality, equanimity, compassion and loving kindness, without bypassing the difficulties of life and the causes of human suffering.

You are warmly welcome to practice with me and Petri in a safer, kinder yoga environment; where it is encouraged to come with all of who you are and gently, lovingly practice being in beloved community with one another, as we dismantle the empire within us and hold space to witness others to do the same.

It will be messy at times and far from perfect, but as bell hooks points out, we must heal in community, not in further isolation and separation.

The invitation is to join us, brave heart. You are needed in this work. We are all needed in this work.

Hello Reader, With the passing of Queen Elizabeth II, the social media streets have been abuzz with various nuanced and complex (as well as not so nuanced, not so complex) perspectives around the long legacy of the British monarch. At the end of this newsletter, I'll share with you two videos I find quite useful around navigating the complexity surrounding many of those who have been affected by the legacy of colonization. I myself am a product of both sides of the equation, coming from an...
